What device do I need to setup a wireless connection for our notebooks?

I have a router already; its a D-Link DGL-4100. Do I buy an access point and connect it to the router or do I need to buy a separate router that is wireless. I would like to keep the original router if I can.

I’m going to Best Buy, Staples(if they sell what I’m looking for), or Radioshack, so if there are any suggestion on a particular item from one of these places please tell me.

May i suggest you buy a wireless Netgear router? They have been voted number one by Which Best Buy awards for the past 3 years running. I take it you know how to connect a laptop to a wireless network?

you need a modem to connect to the router. all the router does is broadcast the signal wirelessly. usually you can buy it from your ISP or they provide you with one. but other than that you need to make sure that your computer is wireless capable.

Any good WIFI compatible router will work.

One; it would be best to avoid Radio Shack (“The Shack” because of cost) if at all possible. Now to get on with the rest of your question. An access point is just what it says, a point of access. You will still need a wireless router to gain a wireless access. A friend of mine uses a wireless access point so that he can work on his back porch, but he still needed the wireless router.

Not to worry, usually most wireless routers also have ethernet connections as well. So what you have in CAT5 wired can still access the internet.

Point of information; If you are thinking of using wireless for gaming? Don’t, there is a latency problem, meaning the signal is too slow (not that radio waves are slow on the contrary, it is the processing of the signal that is slow).
