In the Firefox browser there are a wide variety of plugins, addons, and extensions that will allow the browser to have quite a bit more functionality. These range from ad blocking software, censoring, social media enhancements, and a wide variety of other changes to the browser that is not standard.
At times there are messages that there are updates to some of the extensions that you have installed to the system. Do these need to be updated?
It’s hard to give a definite yes or no to the question, but in general these should be updated for a few different reasons.
Security is the major concern. At times there have been plugins that have had security issues that need to be patched up. Since Mozilla, the makers of Firefox, can’t control the security of each plugin assume that the updates may have a security issue that needs to be dealt with.
New features are another reason for an update. At times the old version might have been missing something that the new one has added in. If you want to have the latest features, get the new version. Also at times with certain tools, like social networking plugins, there are changes made that need the newest version to make sure that all the functions in the tool still work.
Bugs can be fixed with updates. You may not have personally experienced these issues, but they can exist and be taken care of. Getting the update will help you avoid having to deal with the bugs or other problems that might still be part of the coding.
Another big issue is compatibility. At times when Firefox upgrades to a new version of the browser, older plugins must be replaced with the newer ones for them to even work in the next version of Firefox. In order to ensure your extensions continue to work try using more recent versions.
Luckily there is a simple extension update tool that periodically pops up when opening Firefox to let you know which ones have newer versions to make the process simple and easy to do without having to micro manage.
